What is a spiritual name and it’s purpose?
March 10, 2016

A spiritual name is a tool that helps to elevate your energy through the power of and essence of it’s meaning. It is your spiritual and soul identity.

Kundalini yoga students began requesting their spiritual names from Yogi Bhajan in the early 1970’s. Spiritual names are open to anyone who wants to receive them.

They are now carried out by Nirinjan Kaur, who was trained as Chief of Staff by Yogi Bhajan for more than thirty years. His method of determining names involves your birth date, numerology and sometimes the Siri Guru Granth Sahib (the living Guru of the Sikhs).

You can also think of spiritual names as a new and true identity in which to follow. As the your name becomes more familiar, you use the power of its sound current and depth of it’s meaning to go beyond any self imposed limitations to a place that is limitless and infinite.

“Your spiritual name is your designated destiny, your heavenly identity. That’s all it is. You may or may not live to it, but it is your guiding force. And it’s a prayer. When somebody calls me ‘Yogiji,’ it means ‘one who is united with the greater soul.’ When somebody calls me ‘Bhajan,’ it means a ‘divine song.’ And if somebody calls me ‘Harbhajan Singh,’ it means ‘the lion who sings the divine song.’ It’s a prayer in the other man’s word. What is prayer? It is a calling. And you answer the calling. You get uplifted. It’s a plus. It’s a way of receiving people’s blessings.” — Yogi Bhajan
